Rapinoe played for a short time in the Sydney Football Club FC (Australian W-League) in the year 2011, prior to returning to the United States. Her new club is the Seattle Washington Sounders Women. Now the Sound FC. Rapinoe lived in France during the 2013 football season. She then joined the Seattle Reign FC now OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League NWSL which had formed after the WPS broke up. Rapinoe soon became a leading scoring player in the team and eventually was named captain. Her first FIFA Women's World Cup was in the year 2011. In the years 2015 and 2019 her contribution to the U.S. Women's World Cup winning team achieve consecutive championships. In 2018, Rapinoe was named cocaptain. Rapinoe was awarded two bronze medals in her part in the United States' 4-3 win against Australia at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Japan has been postponed until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
